Real-Time System Monitoring and Alerting

BACKGROUND

A national wireless telecommunications company was seeking to continually improve its network by finding and eliminating system problems related to physical cellsite equipment, cellsite software settings and network wide glitches. Due to continually emerging and poorly understood system metrics as well as a lack of useful software tools, the company was relying upon personal experience and anecdotes to find and troubleshoot these problems.

PROBLEM

Though all relevant data was being saved to databases automatically and real-time faults were logged to a file, sorting through this large amount of data proved to be too difficult and time consuming to allow technicians to quickly resolve system issues. Further, it was never known beforehand, which data metrics were important in determining system faults. To improve system reliability through decreased fault resolution time, IAS was contacted for a solution.

SOLUTION

By integrating a diverse set of programming expertise, IAS was able to deliver a solution to the customer which allowed for real-time system monitoring. IAS developed a tool suite which continually monitors both the fault log and database metrics. This tool suite allows users (technicians) to sign up for automatically-generated reports and alarms via a web browser. Users are allowed to sign up to monitor specific portions of the equipment, specific types of faults, and to be notified during specific times. Additional tools (report or alarm generators) can be added to the tool suite as system metrics become better understood. Reports and alarms are sent real-time to users' pagers, email, and/or mobile phones (via text messaging). IAS's tool suite reduced system downtime, user training time, and provided a scalable solution.
